Style: Luxurious 5-star Hotel Perfect for: business, spa, meetings
Area: in the heart of Munich
Situated on Promenadeplatz, in the heart of Munich, the Bayerischer Hof was built by the master architect Friedrich von Gartner at the behest of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. With such illustrious beginnings, it is little wonder then that the hotel sets great store by its history.

Although it was almost completely obliterated during the Second World War, save for the Spiegelsaal (the Mirror Hall), the hotel was restored by Falk Volkhardt, whose family has owned the Bayerischer Hof since 1897. The neighbouring Palais Montgelas, an equally famous building which saw the crowning of Maximilian III and the signing of the Bayerisches Konkordat, adds to the hotel's allure. Continuing the family tradition, Volkhardt's daughter Innegrit now manages the hotel, lavishing the same care and attention to detail, as well as maintaining the high levels of exquisite service that has been the hotel's hallmark for generations.

The Bayerischer Hof entered the 21st century with bold moves in interior design and refurbishment, yet preserving the hotel's grand origins. The changes are best reflected in the unique guestrooms, in the newly refurbished Panorama Floor, in the new restaurants by designer Axel Vervoordt and in the Blue Spa by Andree Putman. The timelessly elegant suites can be combined in any number of ways, including the option of a six-bedroom suite.

Bayerischer Hof offers six room styles: the new, sophisticated Cosmopolitan R&B style rooms and suites with urban chic decor, newly refurbished timeless classic Count Pilati style rooms and suites, chic Hans Minarik rooms, Colonial style rooms and suites in a luscious earth palette with exotic Afro-Asian details, cosy Country House style rooms and Grand Hotel style rooms decorated with fresh and opulent fabrics from Laura Ashley .

Rooms and suites on the historical floors at the Palais Montgelas are large, regal affairs which can be combined for more space. For a truly lavish experience, the penthouse suites come with a fireplace and a whirlpool, and either an 80-sq-m (861-sq-ft) Mediterranean terrace or an astonishing bedroom encased in glass for a breathtaking view over the rooftops of Munich.

Hotly tipped as having some of the finest dining options in the city, guests should note that 'Gault Millau 2010' rated the new gourmet restaurant Atelier with 17 points and Falk's Bar has also just been awarded with 'Bar of the year 2010' by Aral Schlemmer Atlas. Gourmet cuisine with Mediterranean and South German influences is served at the newly refurbished Garden restaurant, like the Atelier the creation of renowned Belgian interior designer and art collector Axel Vervoordt.

Palais Keller, built in the 13th-century vaults which once hoarded the precious salt supplies of the city, offers hearty Bavarian fare, and its bakery is a source of fresh pastries, Bavarian pretzels and other delectable baked goods.

For those with a taste for the exotic, Trader Vic's Polynesian and Pan-Asian menu and its Tiki style atmosphere will prove to be irresistible. The health-conscious guest can indulge in range of balanced, healthy meals with Mediterranean and Oriental influences at the 'Wintergarten at the Blue Spa' and at the Blue Spa barbecue on the panoramic terrace during the summer months.

When it's time for work, the hotel's well equipped business centre offers full Internet and video-conferencing facilities, along with professional secretarial and translation services. Forty large, beautifully designed banquet rooms and a magnificent ballroom are also available to cater to events of all sizes, with capacities of up to 2,500 people.

For a night's entertainment, guests can try any of the hotel's six cosmopolitan bars. Komodie im Bayerischen Hof features light theatrical-style entertainment performed by German stars of the stage and television while the Night Club has become well known as a world-class contemporary jazz venue with a list of star performers.

Little wonder then that awards keeping rolling in-topping the list, Bayerischer Hof was named the Best Hotel in Germany by Business Traveller. Innegrit Volkhardt, who manages the restaurant now, received the prestigious Brillant Savarin Medal. The best award? The fact that guests keep coming back.

A small, intimate restaurant, here the chef Steffen Mezger and his team offer gourmet meals with a selection of two menus, five evenings a week, from Tuesday to Saturday, treating guests to sophisticated seasonal cuisine with regional and Mediterranean touches.

According to the longstanding tradition of hospitality in the Bayerischer Hof, the Garden is open every weekday, at lunchtime as well as evenings, serving contemporary interpretations of classic dishes and light meals with a southern touch. In addition, no matter which restaurant they visit, guests can enjoy an aperitif at one of several locations in the hotel, including the ...
